In a tragic incident near the iconic Eiffel Tower, one person lost their life, and two others sustained injuries in a knife attack. The suspected attacker has been apprehended by French police.
The assault occurred at “Bir Hakeim,” close to the renowned Eiffel Tower a popular romantic spot in Paris, as confirmed by police officials. The suspected assailant is reported to be a French citizen and former intelligence officer.
The victim who tragically lost their life in the attack was identified as a German tourist born in the Philippines. The two other victims, as per the police statement, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The police officer named “Darmanin,” who confronted and apprehended the suspect, utilized a taser gun to neutralize the attacker. Post-arrest, the suspect revealed that his actions were driven by a sense of anguish over the suffering and deaths of Muslims in Afghanistan and Palestine.
This is not the first time the suspect has faced legal consequences. In 2016, he was arrested and subsequently imprisoned for four years for engaging in violent crimes, according to Darmanin.
The suspect is reported to be mentally unstable, exhibiting “serious psychiatric disorders.” During the assault, he chanted “Allahu Akbar.”
French President Emmanuel Macron has characterized the incident as a minor terror attack and has instructed France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office to conduct an investigation.
President Macron conveyed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased German national, expressing gratitude to the officials who confronted and neutralized the assailant, preventing a potentially more significant tragedy.
Macron stated, “The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office will now be responsible for shedding light on this matter so that justice can be done in the name of the French people.”
The public is advised to evacuate the area, and caution is urged to avoid the affected vicinity.
