Britain Reveals Plans to Significantly Control Legal Migration by Raising Minimum Salary for Skilled Jobs

On Monday, Britain unveiled plans to drastically reduce the number of migrants granted British immigration through legal procedures. This involves suggesting a significant increase in the minimum salary required for skilled jobs. The proposal is in response to political pressure from lawmakers within the Conservative Party on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Facing this pressure, the Prime Minister has committed to enhancing control over the issue, particularly with the looming General Election next year. The opposition holds a stronger position and is currently favored in opinion polls.

Legal immigration has played a defining role in Britain’s political landscape for a long time and played a major part in the decision to leave the European Union in 2016.

“However, both businesses and trade unions are criticizing this decision, considering it counterproductive and challenging for private organizations and the state-run health service, both of which are facing workforce shortages.”

According to statistics, annual net migration to the UK reached a record of 745,000 in 2022 and has been increasing ever since. This surge includes migrants from various regions such as India, Nigeria, and China, marking a notable shift from the previous trend of migration primarily from Europe.

James Cleverly, the Home Secretary, stated that measures are now underway to reduce immigrant numbers by 300,000. Prime Minister Sunak said, ‘Immigration is too high. Today, we’re taking radical actions to bring it down.’ This includes deporting migrants who arrived illegally to Rwanda.
