Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused the Government of India of being behind the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder, who wasa prominent religious leader. An accusation that the Asian country has described as “absurd” has revived the diplomatic crises both countries have had for years.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder has uncovered a covert war between Canada and India. The Sikh leader killed in Canada is the leader of Canadian Sikhism-an Indian independence activist who was shot a few months ago in Surrey, western Canada.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has directly blamed the Asian country.
Trudeau has revealed that his country’s intelligence service has concluded that the Indian government is involved in the assassination of the leader of the Sikh community. However, this is not the first conflict between both countries. In recent years, serious aggressions have occurred between both countries.
The origin of the conflict between Canada and India: the Sikh rebellion in the 80s
To understand the origin of this ‘war,’ we must go back to the 80s, when in India, the Sikhs, religious activists seeking the independence of Punjab, began an armed revolt to achieve it. For a decade, Sikhs carried out several attacks and murders in the country. The worst moment came in 1984, when the Hindu army entered the Golden Temple, known there as Harmandir Sahib, and killed the leader of the revolt. The attack also affected hundreds of people who were there. And it was called ‘Operation Blue Star’. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had ordered the attack as revenge. However, months later, the politician was shot dead by two Sikhs, who acted as her bodyguards.
Many Sikhs fled to Canada, where they make up 2% of the population and are the most prominent representation outside of Punjab. And a year after the temple attack, an Air India plane en route from Montreal to Bombay was shot down over the Atlantic, killing 329 people. Despite being inconclusive, the investigations have consistently indicated that the attack was revenge carried out by Sikh extremists living in Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder in Canada, an attack in which the Indian Government was implicated, “is severe and has serious consequences in terms of international law.”
But Trudeau added that he has no interest in “provoking” India, and what he wants is for Indian authorities to take the incident seriously.
Trudeau shook the diplomatic foundations of relations between the two countries by solemnly announcing in the Canadian Parliament that Canadian intelligence services believe India is involved in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar death news.

Singh Nijjar, who had Canadian nationality, was shot by unknown assailants in the parking lot of a Sikh temple in Surrey, in western Canada. The Sikh leader had been accused of terrorism by the Indian authorities for advocating the creation of the state of Punjab as an independent country, Khalistan, for the Sikh minority.
Canada expelled diplomat Pavan Kumar Rai, head of Indian intelligence in Canada. Shortly after, India announced the expulsion of a Canadian diplomat in retaliation for Ottawa’s move.

India Rejects Ottawa’s Accusations Of Sikh Leader Killed In Canada
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced that it has summoned the Canadian High Commissioner to New Delhi to inform him of the Indian government’s decision to expel a senior Canadian diplomatic official.
India today firmly rejected Ottawa’s accusations of New Delhi’s alleged direct involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a leader of the Sikh community in the province of British Columbia. In a statement, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already “categorically rejected” the accusations made against the Indian Government by his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau, and described them as “absurd and exploitative”: The ministry again urged Canada to take “prompt and effective legal measures against all anti-Indian elements operating in its territory.”
It was Trudeau himself, during a parliamentary speech yesterday, who publicly accused India of being involved in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder, shot dead by two men with their faces covered last June while he was in his car in the temple parking lot of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey.
Trudeau did not give details about the path authorities are taking but said he had expressed “in unequivocal terms” Ottawa’s “strong concern” about the issue when he spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the leaders’ meeting of the G20 summit last week.
Shortly after Trudeau spoke in parliament, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced the expulsion of a senior diplomatic official
from India.
